Our first-ever Lunch & Learn
We just held our first-ever Lunch & Learn! Nearly 100 people came out to Valparaiso University for a presentation by Melissa Greenwell, former COO of The Finish Line and Author. After a delicious lunch of orange chicken, NWIIWA Chair, Erica Dombey, opened the Lunch & Learn event with a short bio on Melissa and the motivation behind hosting such an event here in NWI, “NWI is behind the curve in terms of women in leadership roles and gender equality in the workplace”. This was a unique opportunity for organizations to network and show their support for women; whether they are employees, customers, or just the amazing women in NWI.
Ms. Greenwell opened her discussion with her 10 principles for building gender-balanced leadership in corporate and general business settings. Highlights included building a pipeline of female talent for your business as well as how to build a culture that will appeal to women and send the right messages.
Building female talent and diversity in business transitioned into how we, as women, can take the reins if we want to lead. Through building courage, being a little selfish, and paying it forward you can build your career and help others out along the way – the reason that NWIIWA was founded!
The lunch wrapped up with a short Q & A dialog with questions about how to prepare yourself for the tough conversations that come up along the path to success. Follow ups included ways to escalate issues if you continue to be rejected.
